EDUCATION NEWS

  • OSU welcomed its 20th president, Jim Hess, on Tuesday as he acknowledged financial issues including $41 million in mismanaged funds and outlined plans for a new veterinary medicine hospital and increased student scholarships. Faculty, students and local officials praised his straightforward approach, and he will seek legislative support for the hospital by May 30.  The O'Colly
  • Oklahoma State researchers led by Dr. Jeffrey Spitler began a two-year project funded by industry partners through the Center for Integrated Building Systems to create new computer programs for angled borehole design. The new design algorithms, which could cut drilling costs by 30%, allow angled boreholes to work under buildings or from one drill pad & change traditional vertical methods used in the U.S. & help lessen site disruption.  OSU
  • On Tuesday, April 29, scores of Cowboy fans filled the ConocoPhillips OSU Alumni Center to welcome OSU’s 20th president, Dr. Jim Hess, who was formally appointed by the OSU/A&M Board of Regents after serving as interim since February. Hess said he will focus on students—especially by investing in the College of Veterinary Medicine—while beginning his presidency.  OSU

  • Oklahoma State University’s Fire Service training department hosted firefighters from Moore, Kelley and Ketchum in Altus for flammable gas emergencies training over the weekend—OSU trainers taught safety skills for handling gas incidents at both transportation and fixed facilities.  OSU

HEALTH NEWS

  • At Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, a basketball game became critical when student Josh Johnston collapsed from cardiac arrest early in April and was saved through quick CPR and AED use by OSU students, staff, and officers—award recipients on April 28 who helped Johnston now recover with plans to resume activity soon.  OSU
