Good morning, Stillwater. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 1st of May.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Oklahoma State’s 20th president Jim Hess took office and said he faces financial headwinds from national economic downturns and reduced state funding after inheriting $41 million in mismanaged funds from the Innovation Foundation. He plans to build a new veterinary hospital and lower student costs while seeking legislative support by May 30 — his collaborative approach has earned praise from students, faculty, alumni and Stillwater Mayor Will Joyce.  The O'Colly
  • Danielle Nester, a triple major at OSU's Spears School of Business, was named the top senior for spring 2025 and earned the Raymond D. Thomas Award for outstanding scholarship — she will walk the stage this May in her orange gown and then start a master's program in business analytics.  OSU
  • On April 30, OSU Extension shared methods to help older and disabled gardeners reduce bending and reaching by using raised beds and ergonomic tools (expert David Hillock explained that these methods lower physical strain). The guidance included indoor, container, and vertical gardening options (tips designed to keep gardening enjoyable despite mobility challenges).  OSU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor appointed a retired teacher from Edmond to fill the long-vacant seat on the Oklahoma State Board of Education.
