Good morning, Stillwater. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 3rd of May.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kenzie Kraich will serve as Editor-in-Chief this summer + Parker Gerl and Raynee Howell will lead as Co-Editors-in-Chief in the fall to update the student newspaper’s website and print edition. The selections bring experienced student leaders to guide The O’Colly’s future coverage.  The O'Colly
  • Abby McElroy, a working mother and investment manager studying organizational leadership, was named OSU-Tulsa’s Orange Gown graduate on May 2—she will represent nontraditional students at the spring ceremony in Stillwater.  OSU
  • An OSU faculty member asked to have quotes removed from an O’Colly article because they feared OSU administrators would punish their department—two other staff members have also expressed worry that speaking with reporters might lead to retaliation. OSU President Jim Hess stated that employees are free to speak as long as they follow privacy laws, though some remain anxious about possible consequences.  The O'Colly
  • Black flyers labeled DEI were posted on campus by Young Americans for Freedom and carried a hidden message calling to deport illegal immigrants, which upset some students and a professor. The professor (an expert in far-right extremism) said the flyer’s rainbow colors may refer to a banned 4chan GIF, while campus officials said the posters were approved by Student Union Meeting and Conference Services.  The O'Colly
  • Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology earned the Military Friendly School designation for 2025-2026 on Friday, May 2, and is recognized as a Gold Top 10 school for veteran and military-connected students. The award, based on survey responses and public data measuring retention, graduation, job placement, and career training, underscores its commitment to helping student veterans succeed — a key factor in the evaluation.  OSU

HEALTH NEWS

  • OSU alumna Alex Phillips donated a kidney to her fiancé Clayton Hare after his kidney failure was diagnosed in August 2024. They had surgeries in March and are now recovering while planning their wedding.  OSU
  • As the Calf Fry festival nears this weekend, a Stillwater nurse warned students that drink spiking—where someone adds drugs or extra alcohol to a drink—can cause memory loss and dangerous situations, so anyone who suspects an incident should get medical help and report it immediately.  The O'Colly
  • MacKenzie Toliver, a second-year medical student at OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine and a Schweitzer Fellow from Tulsa, used interactive NestU workshops to share nutrition advice and build community partnerships through her project with the Oklahoma Birth Equity Initiative — her work aims to improve maternal health for underserved women. She hosted a session that featured a chef demonstrating recipes and offered detailed diet tips to expectant mothers.  OSU

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a challenging season and a key NCAA Tournament loss that marked the final game for several players, Coach Jacie Hoyt is rebuilding the OSU women's basketball team through the transfer portal. The team added Amari Whiting from BYU, Haleigh Timmer from South Dakota State, Achol Akot from UCF, and Tyla Heard from Oral Roberts — each expected to boost both offense and defense for the upcoming season.  The O'Colly
