COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Centenarians of Oklahoma honored Stillwater resident Harold Lloyd Lowe on his 100th birthday celebration—inducting him into the Hall of Fame earlier this month.  Stillwater News Press
  • Today, The O’Colly summer headlines outlined a busy season in Stillwater—stories include Hugh Jackman’s one-man show opening at McKnight Center on Sept 12, a $250M investment for a new OSU veterinary teaching hospital, and stricter international travel rules at OSU. Other updates include leadership changes with Stillwater Fire’s Terry Essary now chief of Edmond Fire, Kayse Shrum joining Chickasaw Nation as chief health strategy officer, rising tuition differences between OSU and OU, a protest against federal policies, fraternity construction and a Pistol Pete statue theft, the return of Eskimo Joe’s street party, the opening of Block 34 park, a double homicide on West Elm Avenue, and a new dessert shop opening.  The O'Colly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • OSUIT will hold its Summer 2025 Commencement on Thursday, Aug. 21 at Covelle Hall in Okmulgee with ceremonies starting at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.—doors open at 8:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. for each session. The event will honor graduates from four schools with a keynote address by Col. Kevin Roland and recognition for four Outstanding Graduates.  OSU
  • OSU honored a historic $250 million state funding push for its new veterinary teaching hospital on Tuesday at the ConocoPhillips OSU Alumni Center—drawing state leaders, alumni, faculty, staff, and students.  Stillwater News Press
  • Dr. Do Young Kim from OSU received a DOE grant from Ghost Display Technologies to develop an ultralow-cost SWIR sensor that will lower costs from over $10,000 to under $500 and boost resolution from under 1 megapixel to more than 100 megapixels (this project uses new OLED technology to convert invisible light into visible light). The sensor is expected to be used in applications like LiDAR and could eventually be integrated into consumer electronics (a move that may transform imaging in harsh conditions).  OSU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Stillwater announced it will implement a new waste management plan in the downtown area beginning in January. Matt Faulkner—Stillwater’s director of waste management—presented the plan to community members during a recent Downtown Discussion.  Stillwater News Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • Vegas sportsbooks project the Cowboys will win about 4.5 to 5.5 games in the Big 12—making them the team with the lowest win total, though preseason odds often miss the mark. If they win brief toss-up games against tough opponents, a bowl appearance remains a strong possibility.  The O'Colly
