COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This morning, civilians and volunteer firefighters climbed the equivalent of 110 stairs at Boone Pickens Stadium to honor those lost on 9/11. Participants — including OSU Fire Protection Society member Hannah Marie Akoury — felt the strain as they remembered the courage of first responders.  OSU
  • Tiny Paws Kitten Rescue hosts Kitten Korner every first Saturday where locals pay $15 for a 50-minute playdate with adoptable kittens—this event helps raise funds and boost awareness for rescuing premature, abandoned or sick cats.  The O'Colly
  • Oklahoma Home and Community Education and the Stillwater Noon Lions Club are taking orders for frozen fruit pies—cherry, apple, apricot, mixed berry, and peach—with pickup at Highland Park Methodist Church Pumpkin Patch until Sept. 22. Residents who missed the slices at the Payne County Fair now have a chance to enjoy these pies for fall events.  Stillwater News Press
  • On Tuesday, the Nepalese Student Association held a candlelight vigil in Stillwater to honor the 19 protesters killed in Nepal after a social media ban sparked deadly clashes.   • Award-winning author Sheldon Russell visited Stillwater to discuss his new book Listen and share his journey from teaching to writing—local readers asked questions about his detailed retellings of historical events and his experiences as a retired professor.  The O'Colly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Oklahoma State University President Jim Hess announced that Jason Ramsey will serve as the new senior vice president and chief operating officer of the OSU System. The OSU/A&M Board of Regents approved his appointment on September 12 and he will begin his role on October 1 — he brings more than 20 years of higher education experience.  OSU
  • Oklahoma State University hosted its first Cowboys Care Resource Fair on Wednesday at the Orange Grove between the Business and Classroom buildings—where students, faculty and staff learned about mental health help, financial planning, and food support from Pete’s Pantry and local clinics in Stillwater. Organizers said the event, done with 1 is 2 Many, the Department of Wellness and OSU Basic Needs, was led by First Cowgirl Angela Hess and will boost student support.  OSU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Leaders met at the Hamm Institute for American Energy (OSU) on Friday, September 12 to discuss how the United States will power artificial intelligence with new energy solutions; keynote speaker Mark P. Mills and OSU President Jim Hess stressed the urgent need to align energy systems with rising AI demands.  OSU

HEALTH NEWS

  • Michele and Billy Magalassi started a foundation after losing their son to suicide to help prevent more tragedies. The foundation awards scholarships and will host the 'We Matter' week—running from Sept. 15 through Sept. 19—to bring suicide prevention training and community events to local schools.  The O'Colly

SPORTS NEWS

  • OSU coach Jacie Hoyt said she is building on last season’s record success when the Cowgirls won 17 to 1 at home and broke program records. Hoyt said the team added six new transfers and a top 100 freshman—she believes their increased depth will help boost the fanbase this season.  The O'Colly
  • Nine OSU wrestlers earned ranking spots in the InterMat poll with five in the top 10—Troy Spratley is at No. 2 after a strong season and Cody Merrill is at No. 10 as the college wrestling season nears.  The O'Colly
  • Over the weekend, Kansas State lost 24-21 to Army and OSU lost 69-3 to Oregon, and both coaches—Klieman and Gundy—took responsibility while urging their players to get better. OSU will host Tulsa next Friday and Kansas State faces a tough Big 12 schedule as both teams try to turn their seasons around.  The O'Colly
  • Sonora DeFini made a strong start for OSU soccer by scoring two goals and adding an assist in her first few games—Coach Colin Carmichael praised her work ethic and hold-up play as key contributions for the Cowgirls.  The O'Colly
