- ➤ The ALTA Good Deeds foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to Kickin’ Childhood Hunger— a nonprofit based in Stillwater— at an event in New York City on Oct. 8. Stillwater News Press
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A 2023 report showed that nearly half of Oklahoma households struggled to afford basic needs as limited incomes priced many families out of their homes. The study found that 16% of households earned below the Federal Poverty Line and 29% were ALICE households—suggesting that raising the minimum wage could help reduce evictions. Stillwater News Press
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Dr. Michael Buser, a professor and Endowed Chair in Cotton Engineering at Texas A&M, was inducted into the CEAT Hall of Fame on October 14th and received recognition for pioneering research that saved $1.46 billion in cost-saving efforts for the cotton ginning industry—tracing his success from his early studies at OSU. - ➤ Oklahoma State University held a ribbon cutting for the renovated Hargis Leadership Institute on October 14. Former President Burns Hargis celebrated the event by signing his book One Lucky Cowboy: The Life of Burns Hargis — an effort that supports the institute’s work to teach leadership skills to students. - ➤ CEAT researchers at OSU studied gypsum-filled fractures in Martian rocks to provide NASA guidelines for drilling during its Mars Sample Return mission— their findings will guide future efforts to preserve valuable samples. OSU
- ➤ Dr. Joseph Campbell was named the 2024 CEAT Hall of Fame inductee and received the Lohmann Medal on October 14th. He began his career at the NSA and helped create secure voice technology — work that earned him many honors over his long career. OSU
- ➤ Google is building a data center in northeast Stillwater and it announced a $600,000 donation to Stillwater Public Schools — the money will help with school programs and boost energy resilience efforts. Stillwater News Press
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Oklahoma State University professor Nurhan Dunford advanced sustainable processing on (Oct. 14) by using innovative methods to turn plant waste and by-products into value-added materials. Her research (recognized with the Fulbright Canadian Research Chair in Food Security) will help local food processors reduce waste and protect the environment. OSU
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Thousands of Oklahoma youth without permanent housing do not qualify for HUD services because the agency funds only those sleeping in shelters—outdoors or in abandoned buildings. The rule leaves many at-risk young people without the support they need. Stillwater News Press
