Good morning, Stillwater. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 14th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dr. Kayla Jiang of Spears Business is using data analytics to study how false information spread during the March 14 wildfire that affected Stillwater and Payne County. She says local groups — including community leaders and journalists — can help people check facts before sharing news.  OSU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • OSU launched a $2 billion campaign to support renewable scholarships, campus upgrades and athletic programs, and it awarded its first Code Calls Scholarship to junior Lizzie Cowan on Thursday (she needed a new funding boost as her previous support was ending in spring). The silent phase raised $900 million from more than 81,000 donors (a strong start toward its goal) and the campaign will continue until summer 2030.  The O'Colly
  • Oklahoma State University launched its $2 billion campaign The Code Calls on November 13th at The McKnight Center for the Performing Arts—featuring the Cowboy Marching Band and Spirit Squad—to raise funds for scholarships, research, and student support. OSU President Jim Hess and campaign leaders urged alumni, donors, and students to invest in a future defined by character and opportunity as the initiative runs through 2030.  OSU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • OSU started a five-year project funded by a USDA grant on November 13th to create water-smart production systems for the Ogallala Aquifer. The project brings researchers together—using satellite data to study groundwater policies and help local producers use smarter irrigation methods for long-term sustainability.  OSU

HEALTH NEWS

  • OSU's Spears Business faculty created a patent-pending AI tool that uses 10 biomarkers to predict diabetic retinopathy risk and it will soon be pilot tested in rural clinics—helping primary care providers catch the risk early and guide timely treatment.  OSU
